Roles

Roles is where learning shifts.

Imagine a classroom where the thinking belongs to the learner.

Not the kind of thinking that happens at the end of a unit, when they are asked to recall what was taught. The kind that happens in the middle of the work, where learners are making decisions about what comes next. They are not performing understanding for an audience. They are owning it for themselves.

When Roles is present, learning becomes co-created. The anchor charts on the walls were made by learners, not printed by the teacher. The success criteria were built together, not handed down. The learner can tell you not just what they are doing but why, what they are aiming for, and how they will know when they have got there.

Learners are active in how they want to learn, what they want to produce to demonstrate their understanding, and what evidence of achievement actually looks like for them. Assessment becomes something that belongs to the learner, not something that happens to them at the end of a unit.

This is not chaos. It is structured independence. The teacher is still present, still guiding, still designing the conditions. The difference is who does most of the thinking. We are teaching young people how to think for themselves. The world they are entering is one where AI is reshaping what human work looks like, where certainty is shrinking, and where the capacity to think independently, to connect ideas across disciplines, and to create something new is the skill that cannot be automated.

Learning is not for coverage. It is for helping learners see the relationships between ideas, so they can solve real problems and create things that have never existed before.

You can build a strong culture. You can hand learners real agency. Both of those things can be true, and learning can still feel stuck.

That gap is where Roles lives. Culture sets the conditions. Agency opens the door. Roles is what happens when learners actually walk through it and start driving.

For that to happen, two shifts have to occur at once. We have to change what we believe a learner is capable of. The learner has to change it too. Neither can do it alone. This is not a programme a teacher implements. It is a relationship both parties have to enter together.

Learning is not for coverage. It is for helping learners see the relationships between ideas, so they can solve real problems and create things that have never existed before.

What it looks like when Roles is missing is often visible by the frustration. Not the frustration of learners who are disengaged or indifferent. The frustration of learners who are invested. Who have been shown an alternative way of learning, who believe in it, but who have never been taught how to actually go down that path. They have the vision. They do not have the tools or the permission to use them differently.

The culture is warm. The agency is real. But the learning is still mostly happening to them rather than with them. The learner is watching instead of doing. Receiving instead of constructing. Performing understanding instead of owning it.

They have been taught there is a different road. Nobody showed them how to read the map, or how to use the tools once they got there. This is not a failure of effort. It is a failure of design. The conditions were built but the role was never transferred.
