Experiences

Experiences reflect where learning becomes action.

Imagine walking into a classroom where learners are making real decisions about their own learning.

Not decisions about what to buy for lunch or when to take a bathroom break. Decisions about what they will do, how they will do it, and what it will look like when they are done. They are building products that matter to them, because they chose them. They are solving problems that caught their curiosity, because they own the inquiry.

This is what it looks like when experiences drive the learning.

There is something buzzing in the air in spaces like this. Learners are working on different products that reflect the overall content objective. They decide what the process will be based on prior learning and examples on the walls. They decide what products will be created, based on prior brainstorming sessions grounded in learner interests. Everything in the room is designed to help learners see that learning is an experience, not something we do to acquire information.

Learning is not for coverage. It is for helping learners see the relationships between ideas, so they can solve real problems and create things that have never existed before.

The noise might catch you first. Voices layered on voices. Movement across different spaces. Collaboration happening in pockets around the room. Your first instinct might be to wonder if the learning is off-task.

It is quite the opposite.

What you are witnessing is learners actively engaged in accountable talk, because they are driving the experiences themselves. Because learners own the learning, there are few behavior issues. We have tapped into the inner heart of our learners and given them permission to live in it freely. The transformation from learner to systems thinker begins here, in this noise, in this freedom.

Learning is not for coverage. It is for helping learners see the relationships between ideas, so they can solve real problems and create things that have never existed before.

A common misconception is that experiences are playing at learning. That the noise, the movement, the freedom to choose means rigor has been left behind.

This is a misreading of what you are seeing. When learners design their own process and choose their own products, the accountability is not removed. It is transferred. The learner becomes responsible for the quality of their thinking, the integrity of their work, the depth of their understanding. There is no hiding behind a rubric someone else created. There is nowhere to hide at all, because the learning belongs to them.

The rigor is still there. It has just become personal.

Experiences shape who we are as lifelong learners. They give us permission to be our true selves, not what we are expected to be. When a learner designs an experience, they are not just acquiring knowledge. They are discovering who they are as a thinker, as a creator, as someone who can change the world around them. That discovery is everything.
