Did You Know?: Validating and affirming learning is being culturally responsive?

I have been thinking a lot about validating and affirming our learners as I reflect on my reading journey of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students by Zaretta Hammond. 

I want to do more than affirm my learners based on their merits, abilities, and achievements.  I'm interested in validating who they are as young people.  

Do you have any strategies or tips to share that you already use in your practice?
